On 9 September 2025, Nepalese Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli resigned following a wave of violent, youth-led “Gen-Z” protests against a controversial social media ban and widespread allegations of corruption.
The unrest was sparked by the government’s imposition of restrictions on platforms such as Facebook, X, and YouTube, triggering outrage among net-savvy youth. When the social media ban was lifted, it was too late to calm the growing fury.
Violence swiftly escalated. Security forces reportedly used tear gas, rubber bullets and live ammunition, resulting in at least 19 deaths and more than 100 injuries. Protesters responded by torching the residences of high-ranking officials, including President Ram Chandra Poudel, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and PM Oli himself, though Oli was safe at his official residence.
In the immediate aftermath, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned, citing moral responsibility for the violence. An indefinite curfew was imposed in Kathmandu and elsewhere, schools were closed, and flights were cancelled amidst continued civil unrest.
Mr Oli’s resignation was framed as a political measure to defuse the crisis and pave the way for constitutional and inclusive resolution. The government has pledged compensation for the victims and promised an investigation into the events.
