Nepal Appoints Interim PM Sushila Karki for Six-Month Transition to Elections

Nepal has appointed Sushila Karki, former Chief Justice and the country’s first female prime minister, as interim leader, with a mandate to serve only six months before fresh elections.
Karki assumed office on 12 September 2025, following mass protests led by young people demanding accountability, an end to corruption, and political transparency. The unrest had forced the resignation of former Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli.
On her first day in office, Karki declared she would not remain in power for longer than six months. She set the next general elections for 5 March 2026, pledging her interim government would focus on restoring stability, addressing protesters’ grievances, and paving the way for a credible, democratic transition.
Following her swearing-in, Nepal’s President Ram Chandra Paudel dissolved the House of Representatives on Karki’s recommendation, formalising the interim setup.
While welcomed by many as a breakthrough after weeks of turmoil, Karki inherits substantial challenges: investigating the deadly violence associated with the protests; ensuring fair electoral preparations; and managing public expectation for reform and good governance.
