Nasarawa 2027: Ex-IGP Adamu Rejects Consensus Push, Insists on APC Primary Showdown

A former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Nasarawa State, dismissing moves to impose a consensus candidate within the All Progressives Congress.
Adamu’s decision sets up a potential clash with Ahmed Wadada, who is widely regarded as the preferred successor of Governor Abdullahi Sule. Wadada, currently representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District, had earlier indicated that party stakeholders were working towards adopting a consensus candidate ahead of the primaries.
However, speaking through his campaign’s Director General, Musa Hussein, Adamu made it clear that he would not step down for any arrangement that bypasses due process. The former police chief has already obtained his expression of interest and nomination forms, signalling readiness for the party’s primary election scheduled for 21 May 2026.
Hussein emphasised that the campaign remains confident in Adamu’s popularity and electability, insisting that the race should be determined through a transparent and credible primary rather than internal agreements.
He also criticised attempts to endorse a single aspirant ahead of the primaries, describing such actions as unconstitutional and a threat to internal party democracy. According to him, the party’s constitution only recognises two pathways for candidate selection, direct primaries or consensus reached through broad agreement, not unilateral imposition.
The campaign further raised concerns over alleged pressure on party officials and public office holders to support a particular aspirant, warning that such practices could undermine the credibility of the process and weaken party unity.
Adamu’s camp has now called on the APC’s national leadership to intervene, ensure neutrality among party officials, and uphold a level playing field for all aspirants.
