NAFDAC Issues Recall for Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap Over Harmful Chemical
Omoyeni Olabode

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced a recall of Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap (100g), batch number 81832M 08, produced in Germany. The recall is due to the presence of Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA), a chemical banned in cosmetic products due to its potential health risks. BMHCA has been associated with reproductive harm, potential effects on unborn children, and skin sensitization leading to allergic reactions.
NAFDAC emphasized that the affected product does not comply with the Cosmetic Products Regulation and is not listed in its database. The agency has prohibited the importation of soaps, including Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap, into Nigeria as per the restricted import prohibition list. Consumers in possession of the product are advised to discontinue use immediately and submit any remaining stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.
The recall aligns with actions taken by regulatory authorities in the European Union, which have banned BMHCA in cosmetic products due to its associated health risks. NAFDAC urges importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance to prevent the importation, distribution, sale, and use of the affected products.
Healthcare professionals and consumers are encouraged to report any adverse effects experienced from using regulated products to NAFDAC via its E-reporting platforms or the Med-Safety app available for download on Android and iOS platforms.
