José Mourinho is on the brink of returning to Benfica as head coach, with reports indicating that a two-year contract has been verbally agreed, running through to the end of the 2026/27 season.
The move comes after Benfica’s shock 3-2 home defeat to Qarabağ in the Champions League, which led to the dismissal of manager Bruno Lage. Mourinho, 62, who left Fenerbahçe in August following their elimination by Benfica in the Champions League playoff round, would be returning to the club where his senior managerial career began back in 2000.
While Benfica and Mourinho have reportedly reached the stage of verbal agreement, the final contract is expected to be signed imminently. The appointment is intended to steady the club’s fortunes, with Benfica currently under pressure after recent European and domestic disappointments.
