Mike Ejeagha, Iconic Highlife Musician, Dies at 95

Veteran Nigerian highlife musician Mike Ejeagha, renowned for his distinctive blend of Igbo folklore and highlife music, has passed away at the age of 95. He died on Friday night, June 6, 2025, at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, following a prolonged illness. His eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, confirmed the sad news to Vanguard in a telephone conversation.

Born on April 4, 1930, in Imezi Owa, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Ejeagha began his musical journey in the mid-20th century. He was instrumental in popularizing Igbo highlife music, incorporating traditional proverbs and storytelling into his songs. Over his illustrious career, he recorded over 300 songs, many of which remain culturally significant today.

Ejeagha's music experienced a resurgence in popularity in 2024 when his 1983 hit song "Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche" went viral on social media. The song's catchy refrain, "Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo," became the centerpiece of a viral dance challenge initiated by comedian Brain Jotter. This newfound attention led to widespread recognition and appreciation of Ejeagha's contributions to Nigerian music.

In recognition of his immense contributions to the cultural heritage of Enugu State, the state government renamed Obinagu Road, leading to his residence, to Mike Ejeagha Road. Governor Peter Mbah, during the inauguration of newly constructed and reconstructed roads in Abakpa Nike, emphasized the importance of celebrating individuals who have shaped the identity of Enugu State. The state government also pledged to take full responsibility for Ejeagha's upkeep as part of its commitment to preserving the legacies of indigenous legends.

Mike Ejeagha's passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian highlife music. His legacy lives on through his timeless songs, which continue to inspire and educate listeners about Igbo culture and traditions.
