Melaye Warns Tinubu Might Soon Borrow from Opay and Moniepoint Amid Rising Debt Concerns

Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye has issued a sharp critique of President Bola Tinubu’s fiscal strategy, warning that the government might resort to borrowing from popular Nigerian fintech firms OPay and Moniepoint if the current borrowing spree continues. He made the remarks during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time on 8 September 2025.
Melaye bemoaned the administration’s aggressive pursuit of foreign loans despite widespread economic hardship across the country. He pointed to the Senate’s approval of over $21 billion in loans and a $1.7 billion borrowing from the World Bank as signs of increasing financial recklessness.
He also lambasted what he described as lavish expenditures, referencing the purchase of a presidential yacht and jet, acquisitions he argued were made in a time of austerity and persistent hunger.
“The president has borrowed like no other in history. If he’s still borrowing from international lenders, it wouldn’t surprise me if he starts borrowing from OPay and Moniepoint,” Melaye warned, highlighting growing fears that the regime is mortgaging Nigeria’s future.
