A 46-year-old man from Glen View, Zimbabwe, has been arrested for allegedly assaulting his 18-year-old daughter-in-law over a period of five days, in a case that has deeply shocked the local community.
The suspect, a father of four, is accused of abusing his position of trust to commit the assaults while threatening the young woman with harm. Authorities took him into custody on Tuesday, April 1.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the arrest, stating, “Police arrested a Glen View 3 man for sexual assault. The accused is the complainant’s father-in-law.”
Reports indicate that the suspect would leave his wife in their bedroom at night and sneak into his daughter-in-law’s sleeping area, where the attacks took place. The abuse allegedly began on March 18, when the victim, who had been resting in the dining room with her husband, was attacked.
Initially, the victim was unaware that the perpetrator was not her husband. She was violently slapped, restrained with handcuffs, and silenced with tape. Over the next five days, the assaults continued in the same manner, with no protection used.
To ensure her silence, the suspect allegedly threatened to harm the victim’s five-month-old child if she spoke out. Fearing for both her life and her child’s safety, she endured the abuse until she found an opportunity to escape.
On the fifth day, the victim managed to flee the house and confided in her mother, who immediately reported the crime to the police. This led to a swift investigation and the suspect’s arrest.
The victim has since been taken to the Family Support Clinic for medical evaluation, and authorities continue to investigate the case.
