Legal Practitioner Sues Nigeria Democratic Congress Over Withheld Anambra House of Reps Primary Results

Legal practitioner Obunike Calistus Ohaegbu has dragged the leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) before the Federal High Court in Abuja, alleging that the party leadership has unlawfully refused to announce the official results of its primary election for the Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency of Anambra State.
In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1219/26, Ohaegbu—who participated as an aspirant in the May 2026 primary—claims he polled the majority of lawful votes cast at the exercise.

The plaintiff alleges that rather than declaring the legitimate outcome, party officials secretly moved to adopt another contender, Peter Uzokwe, as the nominated candidate. Filed against five defendants—including the NDC, Dr. Ebere Onunkwo, Dr. Socrates Ebo, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Peter Uzokwe—the suit seeks a court order compelling the party to officially announce the primary results, upload Ohaegbu's name to INEC's candidate portal, and restrain the electoral umpire from recognizing any other nominee for the constituency.

Presiding judge Justice Mohammed Umar adjourned the matter to October 14, 2026, after noting that key defendants had not yet been served with hearing notices, ordering proof of service across all parties before legal arguments commence. The dispute marks yet another pre-election legal battle facing the NDC as political parties navigate internal nomination controversies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
