Lassa Fever

Nigeria is witnessing a concerning rise in Lassa fever-related deaths despite ongoing national response efforts aimed at controlling the outbreak. Health authorities have reported an uptick in infections and fatalities across several states, prompting renewed calls for stronger intervention and public awareness.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) confirmed that cases have spiked in 2025, with new infections spreading rapidly in parts of the country, including Edo, Ondo, and Bauchi States. The hemorrhagic fever, transmitted through contact with infected rats or human-to-human in severe cases, remains a recurring health challenge.

Despite increased surveillance, public education campaigns, and deployment of medical supplies, the death toll continues to rise. Experts attribute the surge to poor sanitation, delayed diagnosis, and limited access to early treatment, particularly in rural areas where healthcare infrastructure is weak.

Health officials are urging citizens to maintain proper hygiene, avoid contact with rodents, and report symptoms such as persistent fever and bleeding immediately. The government has reiterated its commitment to curbing the outbreak, but rising numbers suggest that more aggressive and coordinated measures may be necessary.
