Lamine Yamal, Groin Injury

Barcelona have confirmed that Lamine Yamal will miss their Champions League opener against Newcastle United due to a groin injury sustained during Spain’s recent international fixtures.

The 18-year-old picked up the injury while on duty with the Spanish national team, where he also played through discomfort. Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has been critical of how the teenager was managed by Spain, accusing the federation of failing to protect the player after he played despite pain and was unable to train properly between matches.

Yamal has already missed Barcelona’s recent LaLiga victory over Valencia, and his absence continues to worry the Catalan side as they begin their European campaign. The squad will also be without Alejandro Balde and Gavi, who remain sidelined due to injury, while goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen is still unavailable with a long-term issue. On a more positive note, Frenkie de Jong has returned to full fitness and is expected to feature against Newcastle.

The loss of Yamal is a significant setback for Barça, particularly given his strong start to the season in LaLiga, where he has been a key source of goals and creativity. The club remains hopeful that he could be fit in time to make a substitute appearance in upcoming domestic fixtures against Getafe or Real Oviedo, with the aim of easing him back into the squad ahead of future Champions League ties if his recovery progresses well.
