Lagos State Government to Reintroduce Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise to Promote Cleaner, Safer, and Flood-Free City

The Lagos State Government has officially announced plans to reinstate the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, which had been suspended in recent years. This move forms part of a wider strategy to foster a cleaner, safer, and flood-free Lagos, addressing persistent environmental challenges that have long affected the megacity.
The environmental sanitation exercise, a long-standing tradition in Lagos, mandates residents, businesses, and community stakeholders to actively participate in cleaning their surroundings on designated days. The exercise aims to reduce the accumulation of waste, prevent clogging of drainage systems, and promote public health and hygiene. By reintroducing this initiative, the state government hopes to cultivate a stronger culture of environmental responsibility among its citizens.
Flooding remains a major concern for Lagos, especially during the rainy season, often causing disruption to transportation, damage to property, and health hazards due to waterborne diseases. The sanitation exercise is seen as a critical intervention to clear blocked drains and waterways, helping to improve the city’s drainage capacity and minimize flood risks.
In addition to the sanitation days, the government plans to enhance waste management infrastructure and increase public awareness campaigns on environmental sustainability. Officials have indicated that the exercise will be complemented by enforcement measures to ensure compliance from individuals and businesses alike.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of collective effort, stating that “A cleaner Lagos is everyone’s responsibility. Together, we can create a city that is not only visually appealing but also safe and resilient against flooding.”
The reintroduction of the environmental sanitation exercise also aligns with Lagos State’s broader environmental policies, including waste recycling programs, tree planting initiatives, and sustainable urban development projects. By integrating these efforts, the government aims to create a healthier living environment and improve the quality of life for its over 20 million residents.
Further details regarding the schedule, enforcement guidelines, and community engagement plans are expected to be announced by the Ministry of Environment in the coming weeks. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to prepare for active participation in this renewed drive towards a cleaner Lagos.
