The Lagos State Government has announced stringent penalties for individuals caught illegally dumping refuse or littering public spaces. Offenders will face a fine of ₦250,000 or up to three months' imprisonment, as part of the state's intensified efforts to combat environmental violations and promote cleanliness.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the government's commitment to enforcing the Lagos Sanitation Law. He warned that repeat offenders would face even harsher punishments. The crackdown aims to address issues such as flooding and public health hazards caused by indiscriminate waste disposal.

The government has also reiterated the ban on cart pushers, who are often linked to illegal waste dumping. Residents are encouraged to utilize licensed waste operators for proper refuse disposal. Additionally, open defecation and urination remain prohibited, with over 1,710 public toilets available for use across the state.

Enforcement agencies, including the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), are actively monitoring compliance and prosecuting violators. The state is also preparing to enforce a ban on single-use plastics from July 1, following an 18-month grace period, as part of its broader environmental sustainability initiatives.
