‘Kidnapping, Poor Healthcare’ – US Warns Citizens Against Travel to Nigeria
Omoyeni Olabode

The United States government has issued a fresh travel advisory, urging its citizens to reconsider traveling to Nigeria due to widespread concerns over kidnapping, crime, and poor healthcare infrastructure. The advisory highlights persistent threats, including armed robbery, terrorism, and civil unrest, which have made several regions in Nigeria unsafe, especially for foreigners.
In addition to insecurity, the advisory emphasized that medical services in Nigeria often fall short of U.S. standards, warning that access to emergency care and reliable treatment can be severely limited. The notice also noted challenges such as insufficient infrastructure, delays in police response, and the risk of arbitrary detention. Americans currently in Nigeria are advised to remain alert, avoid risky areas, and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for real-time updates.
