José Mourinho in Advanced Talks to Take Over as Benfica Manager After Fenerbahce Exit

Reports in Portugal suggest that José Mourinho is set to return as the manager of Benfica, just weeks after his departure from Fenerbahce. The move follows Benfica’s decision to part ways with Bruno Lage, who was dismissed after a 3-2 Champions League home defeat to Qarabag.

Mourinho, 62, was relieved of his duties at Fenerbahce in late August following a 1-0 aggregate loss to Benfica in the Champions League qualifying play-off. He initially joined Fenerbahce in June 2024, but left without having won a major trophy during his spell and amid concerns about the team’s style of play.

If confirmed, Mourinho’s appointment at Benfica would mark a return to the club where he began his managerial career 25 years ago. His track record includes success at high-profile clubs like Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and others.

Benfica, having finished second in the Primeira Liga for the past two seasons, are hoping Mourinho can restore their domestic dominance and push deeper in Europe.
