Isak, Liverpool Debut, Atletico Madrid

Liverpool’s manager Arne Slot has confirmed that new signing Alexander Isak is among the squad for their Champions League opener versus Atlético Madrid, signalling the Swedish forward could finally make his debut for the Reds.

Isak, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle in a British-record £125 million deal, was not involved in Liverpool’s 1–0 win over Burnley due to concerns over fitness. However, after training this week, Slot confirmed that Isak is now fully included in the matchday squad for the Champions League tie.

While Isak is in the squad, Slot was clear that the forward is not yet ready for a full 90-minute run. The manager explained that there is a real chance of seeing him on the pitch against Atlético, but he will not complete the match due to his lack of pre-season preparation and recent match action. Slot has emphasised the need to ease him in, noting that the forward must build up his sharpness gradually before being trusted with extended minutes.

Isak’s inclusion adds attacking firepower to a Liverpool side that has already generated high expectations after a busy summer of transfers. His arrival offers Slot more options in attack and provides supporters with the excitement of a big-name signing finally set to make his mark. Slot and teammates, including captain Virgil van Dijk, have expressed confidence in his ability to adapt quickly once his fitness improves.

For Atlético Madrid, the challenge of facing Liverpool’s new-look frontline could prove decisive. Their preparations have been complicated by the confirmed absence of Julian Álvarez due to injury, leaving Diego Simeone without one of his attacking threats. The balance of the clash could shift, with Liverpool potentially benefiting from their strengthened forward line.

If Isak does make his debut, it will almost certainly be from the bench, with his playing time carefully managed to avoid any setbacks. A gradual integration into competitive fixtures appears to be the plan, ensuring that his long-term impact is preserved.

Nevertheless, his presence alone is expected to add a new dimension to Liverpool’s attack as they begin their Champions League campaign, with fans eager to see the record signing take his first steps in a red shirt.
