The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognised the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) under the stewardship of Senator David Bonaventure Mark as National Chairman. This formal recognition, confirmed via INEC’s website on Wednesday, marks the resolution of a protracted leadership struggle within the party.

Also recognised were several senior figures including former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary; Dr Mani Ibrahim Ahmad as National Treasurer; Akibu Dalhatu as National Financial Secretary; and ex-Edo State Governor Prof Oserheimen Aigberaodion Osunbor as National Legal Adviser.

This development follows the ADC’s adoption by a coalition of opposition figures, among them Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir el-Rufai, on 2 July 2025, ushering in an internal restructuring to consolidate a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Despite INEC’s recognition, dissent remains. Dumebi Kachikwu, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has refused to acknowledge the new executive, pledging instead to wait for the final verdict of ongoing court proceedings before conceding legitimacy.

Analysts suggest that INEC's move strengthens the David Mark-led leadership’s institutional standing. Therefore, empowering them to represent the party, field candidates and conduct official business, the ultimate arbiter may well be the courts.
