India Plane Crash: 265 Dead Bodies Recovered in Devastating Tragedy

At least 265 people have been confirmed dead following the crash of Air India Flight AI171 shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. The aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner en route to London, plummeted into a densely populated area near the BJ Medical College, causing catastrophic damage both in the air and on the ground. Victims include passengers, crew members, medical students, and local residents. Among the deceased is former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, adding a political dimension to the already devastating toll.
Incredibly, one person survived the crash—a British national named Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who was seated in row 11A. He reportedly escaped through an emergency exit moments before the aircraft burst into flames. In a brief media appearance, he expressed disbelief at his survival, saying he had accepted death in the final seconds before impact. His account is currently being used to assist investigators in reconstructing the final moments of the flight.
Rescue operations have continued non-stop as recovery teams work through the wreckage, which spans residential streets and parts of the BJ Medical College hostel. Many of the bodies were burned beyond recognition, prompting the use of DNA testing for identification. Local hospitals and forensic units have been overwhelmed, while grief-stricken families await confirmation of the identities of their loved ones.
A full investigation has been launched involving Indian authorities, the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch, and the US National Transportation Safety Board. One black box has already been recovered. Preliminary reports suggest the plane climbed briefly before losing altitude and crashing within 60 seconds of takeoff. Investigators are focusing on possible mechanical or procedural errors related to the landing gear or flap configuration.
