At the recent TIFF Tribute Awards, British actor Idris Elba showered Lagos with praise, calling it “the most amazing place, city in the world.” Speaking to eTalk TV on the red carpet, he said that if you’ve never been to Lagos, you’re missing out, adding that the talent there is “incredible.”

Elba also reflected fondly on his experiences while filming Dust to Dreams in Lagos, particularly highlighting the moment British singer Seal, whose full name is Henry Olusegun Samuel, acted using his Nigerian accent for a role. “That was a real blessing,” Elba said, recalling how Seal and a Nigerian artiste named Konstance performed a new song they wrote for the film, bringing together music and film in a way that celebrated heritage.

The actor’s remarks resonated with many, especially Nigerians, who have often argued that Lagos’s energy, creativity and vibrancy set it apart. Elba’s praise emphasises not just the aesthetic appeal of the city, but its cultural dynamism, a hub where arts, film, music and identity collide in powerful ways.

As Lagos continues to build its reputation on the world stage, for Nollywood, music, fashion and beyond, Elba’s words are yet another testament to what many locals already believe: that this sprawling, chaotic, lively metropolis is a source of inspiration.
