Nigerian celebrity chef Hilda Baci has officially claimed a Guinness World Record for preparing the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice, cooking a remarkable 8,780 kilograms (19,356 lb 9 oz) at Victoria Island, Lagos.
Partnering with Gino Nigeria, the record was achieved during the “Gino World Jollof Festival” held at Eko Hotel & Suites. The event attracted thousands of people who gathered not only to witness the spectacle but also to partake in the dish once the serving was complete.
The cooking took approximately nine hours, involved 1,200 kg of gas, and comprised ingredients including 4,000 kg of basmati rice, 164 kg of goat meat, 220 kg of Gino Asun & peppered chicken cubes, and 600 kg of her own jollof pepper mix.
Organisers used a custom-built six-metre-wide steel pot, with an intended capacity of 22,619 litres. Although the plan was to use 250 bags of rice, they scaled down to 200 bags to avoid exceeding the 20,000-kilogram limit of the measuring equipment.
After weighing, the jollof rice was distributed to thousands of registered attendees, with strict measures in place to prevent waste.
In announcing the record on Instagram, Guinness World Records posted: “Largest serving of Nigerian style jollof rice – 8,780 kg by Hilda Baci and Gino. Nigerian Chef Hilda Baci has made her way back into the record books after kick-starting record fever across Africa..."
For Hilda Baci, this achievement is not only a personal triumph but also a celebration of Nigerian culinary culture and community spirit.
