Health professionals have issued a cautionary warning to the public regarding the frequent consumption of shawarma, a popular fast food item in Nigeria and other parts of the world. According to experts, regular intake of shawarma may contribute to liver damage due to the high levels of unhealthy fats, processed meats, and chemical preservatives commonly found in its ingredients.

Nutritionists explain that many shawarma preparations are laden with saturated fats, excessive salt, and artificial additives, all of which can place an undue burden on the liver. Over time, such strain may lead to conditions like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), liver inflammation, and other chronic liver complications.

Additionally, the grilling and preparation methods used in roadside and fast-food settings often involve re-used oils and low-quality meat, increasing the risk of toxin buildup in the body. Health practitioners stress that the liver, as the body’s natural detoxifier, can be overwhelmed by the constant intake of such foods, resulting in long-term health issues.

Experts recommend that individuals limit their consumption of processed and fast foods like shawarma and instead adopt a balanced diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Regular medical check-ups, adequate hydration, and healthier cooking alternatives are also advised to maintain optimal liver function.
