The controversy surrounding genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Nigeria has intensified following remarks by popular health advocate, Dr. Chinonso Egemba, popularly known as Aproko Doctor. Dr. Egemba publicly declared his opposition to the widespread adoption of GMO foods in Nigeria, citing long-term health concerns and the potential for increased dependency on foreign biotech firms.

In a recent video shared on social media, Dr. Egemba argued that while GMOs may have short-term benefits in food production, Nigeria’s weak regulatory systems cannot guarantee the safe handling or monitoring of genetically modified crops. He questioned the transparency of the approval process by the National Biosafety Management Agency and warned that Nigerians could be exposed to risks without adequate oversight.

Many citizens are now demanding more public education and transparent policies before GMOs are fully embraced in the country.
