Gas Bubbling, Rivers State, NUPRC Investigation, Raise Alarm

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission has commenced an investigation into reports of gas bubbling in a Rivers State community, as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to determine the cause of the phenomenon.

The unusual bubbling was reported in waterways and mangrove swamps in Bille community, located in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State. Residents first noticed the occurrence in October 2025, prompting growing concern over possible environmental and health risks.

According to authorities, the probe involves a joint effort between the NUPRC and the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, with both agencies already conducting field investigations in the affected areas.

Officials confirmed that inspection visits have been carried out, during which samples were collected and sent for laboratory analysis to determine the exact source and nature of the gas seepage.

Despite initial fears linking the bubbling to oil infrastructure, preliminary findings have not established any direct connection to pipeline leaks, oil pollution, or operational failures within nearby facilities.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, stated that further technical investigations are ongoing, with regulators directed to intensify monitoring and carry out additional site visits.

He added that the government remains committed to identifying the source of the gas seepage and ensuring swift remedial action once investigations are concluded.

The development follows rising anxiety among residents, as the bubbling has been observed in multiple locations within the community, raising concerns about safety, water quality, and environmental impact.

Authorities have, however, urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations while efforts continue to safeguard lives and protect the environment.
