French media conglomerate Canal+ has completed the acquisition of MultiChoice Group in a landmark $3 billion deal, gaining full control of Africa’s largest pay-TV operator. The acquisition, finalised this week, gives Canal+ ownership of popular television platforms DStv and GOtv, which serve millions of subscribers across the continent. MultiChoice’s headquarters in South Africa will reportedly continue operations under the new ownership.

Canal+, a subsidiary of French conglomerate Vivendi, had gradually increased its stake in MultiChoice over recent years before finally launching a full buyout offer earlier in 2025. Regulatory approvals from several African countries were secured before the deal was approved.

The deal could lead to major changes in subscription models, content delivery, and regional programming, as Canal+ looks to consolidate its hold on Africa’s fast-growing media and entertainment market.
