Former Presidential Candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim Joins PDP

Former presidential candidate and businessman, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has officially joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking his return to active politics ahead of the 2027 general elections. His defection was confirmed on Wednesday after a series of consultations with key party leaders at both state and national levels.

Olawepo-Hashim, who contested the presidency in 2019 under the platform of the People's Trust party, said his decision to join the PDP was based on the urgent need to rebuild Nigeria's democratic institutions and ensure stronger opposition in the face of mounting socio-economic challenges. He was received by PDP leaders in Abuja and pledged to contribute his experience and resources to the party’s ongoing restructuring efforts.

In a brief statement, he said, “I have returned to the PDP to help deepen democratic values and contribute to repositioning the party for national service. Nigeria needs a credible and prepared opposition to keep the ruling party in check and provide viable alternatives for the people.”
