Former Kogi Deputy Governor Alleges Yahaya Bello Promised Him Succession Before Endorsing Ododo
Omoyeni Olabode

Edward Onoja, former Deputy Governor of Kogi State, has claimed that Governor Yahaya Bello promised him the governorship succession before pulling his support and backing Usman Ododo as his preferred candidate for the 2023 election.
Onoja said that before the 2023 elections, Bello made a personal call to him, asking him to prepare to take over from him, implying that Onoja was expected to be his successor. According to Onoja, this promise was cut short when Bello formally endorsed Ododo.
He expressed feelings of betrayal, arguing that the decision undermined his political standing and breached the understanding between him and Bello. Onoja alleged that the succession promise was not only verbal but serious enough for him to make political plans around it.
The former deputy governor’s revelation has stirred political debate in Kogi, where questions are being asked about trust, political loyalty, and the nature of informal agreements in Nigerian politics.
