Former Gang Leader ‘Keffe D’ Davis Convicted of Tupac Shakur’s 1996 Murder After 30 Years

Ending nearly three decades of speculation surrounding one of hip-hop’s most high-profile unsolved killings, former South Side Compton Crips leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been found guilty of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon for his role in the September 1996 assassination of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur.
A 12-member jury in a Las Vegas court reached the unanimous guilty verdict after deliberating for roughly three hours. Under Nevada law, although the 63-year-old Davis did not personally pull the trigger, prosecutors successfully argued that he acted as the "shotcaller" and orchestrator of the drive-by shooting. The attack was launched in retaliation after Tupac and his entourage assaulted Davis' nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, at the MGM Grand Hotel earlier that evening.

The trial featured self-incriminating evidence from Davis’s own 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend, media interviews, and recorded police statements where he admitted to supplying the .40-caliber firearm and sitting in the front passenger seat of the white Cadillac during the shooting. Davis—the last surviving person who rode in that vehicle—faces potential life imprisonment without parole and has already indicated his intention to appeal the verdict.
