Fire Breaks Out in Lagos Island High-Rise, Sparks Panic Among Occupants

A fire erupted on Tuesday afternoon at Afriland Tower, a six-storey commercial building on Broad Street, Lagos Island, triggering widespread panic as occupants scrambled to flee.


The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service reported that the blaze began in the basement inverter room of the building. A distress call was received at 13:38 hours, prompting fire crews from Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu stations to respond swiftly.


Smoke quickly billowed up through several upper floors, forcing evacuations. Some trapped individuals smashed windows to breathe or attempted to escape via ledges, while bystanders tried using ladders and foam to assist rescue efforts.


According to Deputy Controller General Ogabi Olajide, the panic has since been contained and firefighting operations have effectively subdued the fire. At the time of reporting, there were no confirmed casualties.


Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, while emergency responders remain on site ensuring the building is safe.
