Afriland Towers Fire, 10 Dead

A tragic fire at Afriland Towers in Broad Street, Lagos Island, has left at least 10 people dead, among them four staff from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and six employees of United Capital Plc.

The blaze broke out around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, 16 September 2025, reportedly starting in the inverter room in the basement of the six-storey commercial building. Thick smoke quickly spread through multiple floors, trapping occupants. Emergency services rescued at least nine people, with five revived and four others later found unconscious.

In a statement, United Capital expressed profound grief over the loss of its six staff members, describing them as integral to the company and pledging support for their families. FIRS also confirmed the deaths of four senior staffers, including two Assistant Directors and senior managers.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu called the incident “unfortunate and shocking,” mourning the victims and promising to strengthen fire safety measures across Lagos. President Bola Tinubu extended his sympathies to the families and the affected organisations, while urging greater caution and improved safety protocols.

Efforts are underway to investigate the cause of the fire, with officials noting that safety standards in office buildings will be reviewed to prevent such tragedies in the future.
