FG to Relaunch School Feeding Programme May 29, Targets 10 Million Pupils with Daily Nutritious Meals

Federal Government of Nigeria has officially announced plans to relaunch the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Program (RH-NHGSFP) on May 29, 2025. This initiative aims to provide daily nutritious meals to 10 million public primary school pupils in Primary 1 to 3, utilizing locally sourced ingredients to support both children's health and local economies .
The relaunch aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s second anniversary in office and is part of broader efforts to combat child hunger, improve educational outcomes, and stimulate rural development. The programme is backed by a ₦100 billion allocation in the 2025 budget .
Key features of the updated RH-NHGSFP include:

  • Enhanced Monitoring and Transparency: Implementation of QR-coded supply chains and real-time tracking systems to ensure accountability and quality control .
  • Beneficiary Registration: Collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to register and monitor all beneficiaries .
  • Community Engagement: Active involvement of women-led cooperatives, smallholder farmers, and local cooks to promote community ownership and economic empowerment .
  • Health and Nutrition Oversight: Engagement of nutritionists and health professionals to assess food quality and monitor pupil well-being .

The program aims to increase school enrolment by 20% and academic performance by 15% by the end of 2025, while also striving to reduce rural poverty by 40% through local sourcing and community involvement .

While the RH-NHGSFP has faced challenges in the past, including instances of mismanagement and fraud, the government has emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability in this renewed effort . Development partners and private sector stakeholders have pledged support to ensure the program's success .
