FG Announces 2-Week Complete Closure of First Niger Bridge for Emergency Maintenance

The Federal Ministry of Works has officially announced the complete closure of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, for two weeks starting Monday, September 7, 2026, to carry out essential maintenance and restoration works.
The announcement was confirmed in a statement signed by the Anambra State Controller of Works, Mr. Timothy Emenike, following a recent site inspection by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi. The inspection revealed significant structural vandalism—including the theft of critical iron rods, expansion joint steelworks, stanchion nuts, and bolts by scavengers—which posed severe safety risks to commuters.
According to official updates, the extensive two-week repair schedule will involve:

• Structural Repairs: Replacement of stolen bolts and reconnecting disconnected overhead steel bars.
  
• Resurfacing: Milling and removal of deteriorated asphalt to lighten the heavy "dead load" on the structure, followed by laying a fresh asphalt wearing course.
  
• Security & Lighting Upgrades: Installation of solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras linked directly to security agencies to deter vandals.

The ministry advised motorists and long-distance travelers to utilize alternative routes—such as the Second Niger Bridge—and obey temporary traffic diversions throughout the maintenance period.
