A multigenerational family of five from India, who were set to relocate to the UK, tragically perished in the crash of Air India Flight AI171 shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. Among the overall death toll, numerous Indians traveling to start new lives abroad were lost, marking a poignant and heartbreaking chapter in the disaster.
The deceased included a doctor couple from Rajasthan, whose young children were expected to accompany them to London as they began a new chapter raising their family overseas. Their loss, along with that of other families, underscores the crash’s devastating human cost.
Overall, Flight AI171 was carrying 242 people, including 169 Indian nationals, plus 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Only a single British passenger, seated in row 11A, survived the crash with minor injuries.
Recovery operations have recovered nearly all 269 victims—241 onboard and 28 on the ground—with rescue teams working tirelessly to identify remains via DNA sampling. The tragedy has shocked local communities and the international diaspora, as countless planned futures now lie in ruins.
