A Clark County District Court judge in Las Vegas has sentenced former gang leader Duane "Keffe D" Davis to 40 years to life in prison for his role in orchestrating the September 1996 drive-by shooting that killed hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur.
The sentencing on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, caps a three-decade-long cold case that remained one of the global music industry’s most infamous unsolved mysteries. Davis, 63, was found guilty of first-degree murder following a high-profile trial in August, where prosecutors used his own 2019 tell-all memoir and media interviews—in which he repeatedly admitted to being inside the white Cadillac from which the fatal shots were fired—as pivotal evidence.
“For three years, I've heard you say some variation of the same thing... ‘Yeah, I was involved in this. But I'm different. I've moved on... I'm a grandfather now.’ You don't get to take a man from his family. You don't get to take his very life, his whole future from him, and just walk away from it. Especially when that man is Tupac Shakur.”
— Judge Carli Kierny
The conviction is the first time anyone has been legally held responsible for the death of Tupac Shakur, offering a long-awaited measure of closure to the legendary artist's family, friends, and millions of fans worldwide.
