Barcelona’s rising star Lamine Yamal has officially weighed in on the "GOAT" debate, naming Inter Miami captain and Barcelona legend Lionel Messi as the greatest football player in history. After receiving the Best Young Athlete award at the 2026 Laureus World Sports Awards, the 18-year-old winger was emphatic in his praise for the Argentine icon.
“Leo Messi is the best football player of all time. If he's not the best athlete of all time, he's certainly among them,” Yamal stated. He highlighted Messi's transcendent impact on the sport, noting that the respect he commands globally is a result of his unparalleled consistency and a trophy cabinet that includes over 45 major honors, most notably the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Yamal, who is often compared to Messi due to his left-footed brilliance and La Masia roots, added, “Everyone respects him for what he’s achieved, and I hope I can follow in his footsteps.”
He also reflected on Messi’s influence on his own upbringing, remarking that Messi was part of the "childhood of every kid" who played in parks and schools. As the football world prepares for the 2026 World Cup this summer—likely to be Messi’s final tournament at age 38—Yamal’s comments reinforce the enduring legacy of his idol. Having already broken numerous records for both Barcelona and Spain, Yamal is increasingly seen as the torchbearer for the next generation, though he remains humble in the shadow of the man he considers the ultimate benchmark.
Do you think Lamine Yamal has the potential to actually match Messi’s legacy, or is the "Next Messi" label a burden that no young player can truly carry? Share your comments below!
