EFCC Arraigns Self-Styled Native Doctor and Wife Over Alleged ₦1.09bn Contract Scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially arraigned a self-styled native doctor, Olorunbukunmi Taiwo, and his wife, Awolegan Omolola Omotola, before a Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti over a massive ₦1.09 billion contract fraud.
The couple was brought before Justice Abubakar Usman on Monday, June 8, 2026, facing a six-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretences and retention of proceeds of crime.
According to the EFCC prosecution panel, the defendants allegedly conspired to defraud an unsuspecting widow and private school proprietor from Delta State, Mrs. Anazia Colina Kenechukwu. The couple allegedly convinced the victim that they had been awarded a lucrative road construction contract by the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) and induced her into investing over ₦1 billion into the phantom project.
Investigations by anti-graft operatives revealed that a total sum of ₦1,098,961,500 was funneled into Taiwo's personal Access Bank account. The EFCC has already tracked part of the illicit proceeds to the acquisition of two luxury assets in Ado-Ekiti—the "Town Tavern Lounge" and a premium four-bedroom bungalow. The commission successfully secured an interim forfeiture order against both properties on May 25, 2026.
When the six counts were read to them in court, both Taiwo and his wife firmly pleaded "not guilty" to all charges.
Following their pleas, the EFCC prosecution team requested that the defendants be remanded in custody pending their trial, while the defense counsel sought a date to argue their formal bail applications.
Justice Abubakar Usman subsequently ordered that the couple be remanded in EFCC custody. The case has been adjourned until Thursday, June 11, 2026, for the official hearing of their bail application and the formal commencement of the trial.
