DStv to Launch Sports-Only Package After Losing Millions of Subscribers

Multichoice-owned DStv is preparing to launch a sports-only subscription package in a strategic move to win back millions of subscribers lost over recent years. The new offering is aimed at viewers primarily interested in sports content, especially football, who may have opted out due to rising costs or limited flexibility in the current bouquet system.
Industry insiders say the decision comes after internal data revealed that sports fans make up a significant portion of their former subscriber base. Many of these viewers left the platform due to lack of affordable, dedicated sports options and the emergence of cheaper streaming alternatives offering similar content.
The sports-only package is expected to include major football leagues, athletics, boxing, and other premium live events, while excluding movies, series, and lifestyle channels. DStv is hoping this streamlined approach will allow it to remain competitive and appeal to younger, mobile-first audiences.
While pricing details have not been officially released, sources suggest it will be more affordable than the current premium packages. Multichoice is expected to roll out the new bundle before the start of the 2025/26 football season.
