Omoyeni Olabode

The Grammys have recognised the late Nigerian rapper Dagrin’s iconic track “Pon Pon Pon” as one of the top 10 songs that helped shape the Afrobeats genre. The 2010 street anthem, known for its raw delivery and deep cultural storytelling, continues to inspire a new generation of artists across Africa.
“Pon Pon Pon” stood out for blending indigenous Yoruba lyrics with hard-hitting hip-hop flows, carving a unique space in Nigerian music at a time when Afrobeats was still finding its global footing. The Grammys’ recognition has sparked renewed appreciation for Dagrin’s legacy.
Though Dagrin passed away over a decade ago, his impact on the evolution of Afrobeats clearly lives on.
