Court Orders NYSC to Allow Female Corps Members to Wear Skirts
Omoyeni Olabode

A Federal High Court in Abuja has declared the NYSC’s rule forcing female corps members to wear trousers unconstitutional, ruling it violated their rights to freedom of religion and human dignity. The judgment followed consolidated suits from two former corps members, Blessing Ogunjobi and Vivian Ayuba, who argued that their Christian beliefs prohibit women from wearing traditionally male attire, citing Deuteronomy 22:5.
Justice Hauwa Joseph Yilwa ordered that the NYSC must permit female corps members with genuine religious objections to wear skirts and must issue certificates to those who were previously denied them. While the applicants had sought ₦10 million each, the court instead awarded ₦500,000 apiece for the embarrassment and denial of their rights.
The ruling sets a crucial precedent for respecting religious convictions in uniform policies within government programmes.
