Constitution Review: Nigerians Propose Single Six-Year Tenure for President and Governors
Omoyeni Olabode

As discussions around the amendment of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution continue, a growing number of Nigerians have proposed a constitutional change that would limit the tenure of the President and state governors to a single six-year term. The proposal emerged during public hearings and memoranda submitted to the National Assembly Constitution Review Committee.
Advocates of the six-year single term argue that it would reduce the cost and distraction of re-election campaigns, promote focused governance, and curb the misuse of state resources for electoral purposes. Many believe that giving leaders one uninterrupted term would push them to prioritize performance over politics and strengthen democratic accountability.
The Constitution Review Committee has acknowledged the proposal and confirmed it is under consideration along with other major constitutional recommendations.
