As Cocoa House, Africa’s first high-rise building, clocks 60 years, the Odu’a Investment Company Limited has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and modernizing the iconic structure.
Speaking during a commemorative event in Ibadan, Oyo State—marked by the symbolic release of balloons—Yemi Ajao, Executive Director, Business Development of the Odu’a Conglomerate, revealed that the historic Cocoa House has undergone significant rebranding efforts over the past six decades.
In a sideline interview with journalists, Ajao paid tribute to the visionary leadership of the old Western Region government, whose foresight, he said, placed the region on the global map.
“Cocoa House, which remains the first 25-floor high-rise building in Africa, was commissioned in 1965 after just seven years of construction,” Ajao stated. “It’s remarkable that in all these years, there have been no reports of architectural defects. This stands as a testament to the quality and durability of its original design.”
He explained that the Odu’a Conglomerate has taken deliberate steps to ensure that Cocoa House remains a symbol of innovation and pride for the region. According to him, all the floors of the building have undergone various stages of rebranding to meet modern standards, and additional infrastructural upgrades are in the pipeline.
“Plans are already in motion to install a fifth elevator to complement the four currently in use,” he said. “We are also looking into several enhancements aimed at making the space more functional and attractive for tenants and visitors alike.”
Ajao emphasized that the building remains a key symbol of the region’s economic history and resilience, and the Odu’a Group is fully committed to preserving its legacy while aligning it with future ambitions.
Cocoa House continues to stand tall, not just as a physical structure but as a powerful reminder of what visionary leadership and regional unity can achieve.
