In a spirited post-match press conference, Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle praised his side’s composed 1-0 victory over Rwanda in a vital 2026 World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Chelle singled out the team’s first-half dominance, boasting 70% possession, as the driving force behind the win, noting it forced Rwanda into fatigue and limited their high press in the latter stages of the match.
He explained that after securing the lead, his tactical shift (with the inclusion of two wingers) leaned on the professional depth within his squad to secure victory. Chelle defended his decision to bench captain William Troost-Ekong in the first half, stating: “This is my choice. I do not need to explain. My job is to make decisions. Winning proves the decision was good.”
While content with the result, Chelle acknowledged that the current formation would need adjustments ahead of their critical away clash with South Africa on Tuesday. He described the win as a confidence boost, signalling ambition as the Eagles prepare for what promises to be a decisive encounter.
