BREAKING: Mexico Approves 40-Hour Work Week Policy
Omoyeni Olabode

The Mexican government has officially adopted a new labour reform that reduces the country’s work week from 48 hours to 40 hours. This major policy shift follows months of debates in Congress and comes as part of ongoing efforts to improve work-life balance and protect employee welfare across the nation.
Under the new arrangement, workers will now enjoy two full days of rest each week, instead of the previous single day off. The law will apply to both public and private sector workers. Employers will be expected to adjust existing contracts and shift structures to align with the change, though implementation will be gradual to allow businesses to adapt.
Labour unions and workers' rights groups have praised the development, calling it a step in the right direction toward international labour standards. Mexico had long operated on one of the longest legal work weeks among major economies, but the new 40-hour ceiling brings it closer in line with countries like the United States, France, and Germany.
