Following the passing of Most Rev. Peter Nworie Chukwu, the Vatican has officially appointed Most Rev. Ernest Anaezichukwu Obodo as the Apostolic Administrator of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki. This appointment, made under the authority of Pope Leo XIV through the Dicastery for Evangelization, ensures the continued spiritual and administrative leadership of the diocese during this period of transition. Bishop Obodo, who currently serves as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Enugu, will oversee the affairs of the Abakaliki Diocese until a substantive bishop is named.
The Catholic community mourns the loss of Bishop Chukwu, who passed away on April 10, 2026, at the age of 60. Known as a devoted shepherd and a vocal advocate for justice and peace, Bishop Chukwu’s leadership left a significant mark on the clergy and the lay faithful alike. Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State described his death as the end of an era, highlighting the late bishop’s profound commitment to humility and service to humanity.
As the diocese prepares for the funeral rites of the late prelate, the appointment of Bishop Obodo provides a steady hand to guide the faithful through their grief. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria has called on all members of the church to keep the diocese in their prayers during this time of mourning and change.
