Ayra Starr Triumphs, Becomes First Nigerian Female Winner

At the 2025 BET Awards held June 9 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr made history by winning Best International Act. She edged out strong competition, including Rema and Tyla, becoming the first female Nigerian artist to take home the award. The ceremony, hosted by Kevin Hart, spotlighted her continued impact on the global music stage.
Kendrick Lamar Dominates Key Categories
American rapper Kendrick Lamar emerged as the ceremony’s biggest winner, securing four major awards: Album of the Year (GNX), Best Male Hip Hop Artist, Video of the Year (“Not Like Us”), and Best Collaboration alongside SZA for “Luther”. His critically acclaimed album GNX and high-profile visuals helped him sweep the hip-hop-related categories.
Other Notable Winners Shine
The night also celebrated other impressive artists: SZA took Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Chris Brown earned Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, Doechii won Best Female Hip Hop Artist, and the duo Future & Metro Boomin snagged Best Group. Additionally, Leon Thomas was honoured as Best New Artist, with GloRilla (feat. Kirk Franklin and Maverick City Music) winning the gospel/inspirational category.

Beyond the awards, the event underscored Black cultural achievement, featuring powerhouse performances and tributes. The BET Awards commemorated its 25th anniversary, showcasing not just music but powerful moments highlighting broader cultural and social themes. From Mariah Carey’s performance to Stevie Wonder presenting the Ultimate Icon award to Jamie Foxx, the evening was both celebratory and culturally significant.
