Asteroid 2025, FA22, Flyby of Earth

A large asteroid named 2025 FA22 is set to make a close pass by Earth on Thursday, 18 September 2025, but scientists emphasize there is no risk of collision.

Astronomers first spotted 2025 FA22 earlier this year via the Pan-STARRS 2 Survey in Hawaii. The asteroid is estimated to measure between 120-280 metres across, that’s large enough to dwarf some famous tall structures, but still entirely harmless in its current trajectory.

On Thursday, 2025 FA22 will approach Earth at a speed of about 24,000 mph (around 38,600 km/h) and pass at its closest distance of approximately 842,000 kilometres, just over twice the distance from Earth to the Moon. Earlier concerns about potential impact have now been dismissed by updated tracking and observations.

Skywatchers interested in seeing 2025 FA22 can do so with a decent backyard telescope or strong binoculars under dark skies. The Virtual Telescope Project in Italy will livestream the event, making it accessible even if the skies above are cloudy.
