As ECOWAS Marks 50 Years: A Time for Reflection and Renewal
Olamilekan Boluwatife

Over the past five decades, ECOWAS has made significant strides—particularly in peacekeeping efforts and championing the free movement of people, goods, and services across West Africa. These achievements stand tall, even in the face of persistent regional challenges.
To maintain its relevance in a changing world, ECOWAS must reinvent itself. It needs to embrace innovation and reexamine its core purpose with a renewed sense of direction—anchored by effective, forward-thinking leadership at both national and regional levels. Good governance must be the foundation upon which its future is built.
As for the AES countries, they can still pursue their national interests while remaining within ECOWAS. Doing so in a cooperative spirit—rather than through confrontation—can foster stronger ties and mutual growth.
Ultimately, African nations stand to gain more from unity than division. Now more than ever, we must pull together to build a stronger, more integrated continent.
