Billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote has responded to questions regarding his decision to take the Dangote Petroleum Refinery public, explaining that the company’s Initial Public Offering (IPO) is designed to give ordinary citizens direct ownership in Africa's largest industrial asset rather than simply raise capital.
Addressing inquiries during an international broadcast interview after observers questioned why Africa's wealthiest individual needed public funds for the project, Dangote clarified that the primary objective of the listing is to spread prosperity.
Set at an accessible minimum subscription threshold of ₦5,250 for 10 shares priced at ₦525 each, the "People’s IPO" aims to onboard up to 10 million shareholders—including civil servants, traders, students, and first-time retail investors—across Nigeria and the broader African continent.
“It's not that we want to raise money... The Dangote refinery IPO is more than an investment opportunity; it is an opportunity for millions of Nigerians and Africans to build lasting wealth through ownership of a world-class industrial asset. We fully share all our prosperity with the people... This is a strategic investment in an asset that is creating jobs, conserving foreign exchange, enhancing energy security and strengthening Africa's industrial capacity.”
— Aliko Dangote
The refinery generated roughly ₦19.47 trillion in revenue and ₦2.55 trillion in profit after tax during the first half of 2026, backing its ₦65.22 trillion implied market capitalization upon listing.
