Alex Otti Warns Against Creation of 31 New States in Nigeria

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has cautioned against the proposal to create 31 additional states in Nigeria, stressing that such a move would impose a significant economic burden on the country. He argued that instead of expanding the current structure, attention should be focused on making existing states more financially viable and less dependent on federal allocations.

Otti expressed concern that adding to the current 36 states would worsen administrative costs, increase the pressure on limited national resources, and divert focus from developmental priorities. According to him, what Nigeria needs now is not more states but a deeper conversation on restructuring and improving governance across the board.

Introducing more states would mean creating more bureaucracies, more government positions, and more financial commitments without guaranteed productivity or self-sufficiency.
