Akon’s Wife Tomeka Files for Divorce Days Before 29th Anniversary

Akon’s wife, Tomeka Thiam, has filed for divorce just days ahead of what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary. The filing was submitted on September 11, 2025, and cites irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.

Tomeka is seeking joint legal custody of their 17-year-old daughter, Journey, while requesting sole physical custody. She also wants spousal support, and has asked the court to deny Akon any spousal support in return.

The marriage between Akon (Aliaune Badara Thiam) and Tomeka began in 1996, and the timing of the divorce filing has drawn attention because it comes just three to four days before their anniversary date, September 15.

Akon has been open about having multiple children—nine in total—with various partners. While much of his personal life has remained private or semiprivate, this legal move has triggered widespread discussion around his family dynamics and past statements regarding polygamy.
