The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially declared its support for making electronic transmission of election results compulsory in Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, said that the party wants legislation passed to require the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to send results electronically. He argued the change is vital for increasing transparency and ensuring each vote is properly accounted for.

Abdullahi stressed that when the outcome of elections is digitised and results are transmitted directly from polling units to a central system, chances for result manipulation drop significantly. He said this step would help restore public trust in the electoral process. According to him, guaranteeing that votes cast by Nigerians genuinely count hinges on adopting this technology.

The ADC also pointed out that credible elections are fundamental for the survival of democracy. Without reforms like e-transmission, they say, election outcomes can easily be questioned or undermined because of delays, suspected tampering, or logistical issues. The party emphasised that a legal framework would hold INEC accountable for ensuring final results reflect voters’ will.

As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 elections, this push by ADC adds to growing calls from civil society and other political groups for electoral reform. Legalising e-transmission is seen as one of the key solutions for safer, more transparent polls.

Do you believe making electronic transmission of results mandatory will really improve election credibility? What challenges do you envision in implementing this kind of reform? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
